Split

At 1:30 from Pakostane, you can not miss the city of Split. It is a must to do before leaving Croatia. Both modern (all the suburbs of Split is modern as all European cities) and full of history with this little square of history that is the Diocletian palace.

The founder of Split was the Roman Emperor Diocletian (245-313). Between 295 and 305, he built a huge palace to finish his life in the country of his birth. For three centuries the only occupants of the building were Roman monarchs. The entire old town is better to explore on foot, you go from palace to palace, walk on these slabs of white stone from the island of Brac, discover small restaurants .....

Firstly the Diocletian palace: This is a unique construction in Europe, nearly 190 meters long and 150 meters wide, the whole palace is surrounded by high fortified walls guarded by towers, and is located near the Adriatic Sea. To the left of the palace is the departure for boats islands (Brac, Hvar etc ...) and right next to the large outdoor market, open all year round. The palace was built around the year :300 mixing ancient Greek and Byzantine style. Inside the palace, after the time of Diocletian, the son of the centuries, people have appropriated the palace and have built their own home, leaning their house to existing buildings. then we will find the Greek or Egyptian style (eg presence of sphinxes and columns of granite ...)

The peristyle is a rectangular courtyard open to the sky, which was used as a vestibule to the courtiers before entering to the private apartments of the Emperor Diocletian. Currently he serves as a passage for tourists but also Splitois who come for a coffee during the day. What is remarkable in this place is the mixture of different eras and styles: Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, Venetian, neoclassical, and even Napoleonic (look imperial eagles!).

Diocletian's mausoleum and cathedral Sveti Dujam: climb to the top of the campanile: beautiful view of the old town of Split. So the mausoleum where rested the body of the Emperor Diocletian (normaly ! because we have not found a trace). The mausoleum was then transformed into a cathedral which makes it one of the oldest in the world (7th century). The foundations of the palace: This is actually the crass under the palace so that the palace is above the sea level This large underground very interesting to visit because the plan of this sub meanly corresponds exactly to the apartments who was was upstairs. we can better realized the size of the rooms that existed at the time.

Throughout your walk in the street of the palace you will discover other palaces: the Agubio palace, the palace Cindro etc ... Be sure to rub your finger on the foot of the statue of the emperor Gregory, this give chance.

The Mestrovic Gallery: towards the Marjan hill, you will find this magnificent house of the famous Croatian sculptor Mestrovic, who are exposed many works. Mestrovic was born in Slavonia (Croatia) in 1883, born in a poor family, he was able to study through scholarships, in Vienna and then to Paris where he met Rodin, who said that he was his best pupil ! He then left for the United States where he had the fortune with selling his sculptures.
